I wrestled well this weekend with 5 wins en route to a first place finish.  It was nice to get some wins under my belt after a disappointing tourney in Russia.  I felt like I stayed in good position this weekend and controlled the tie-up fairly well.  I surprised myself by winning all of my matches in 2 periods.  It was a good weekend of wrestling with wrestlers from Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan, Japan, China, Korea, Brazil, and Italy.    Clint Wattenberg, my teammate, came away with the gold at 84kg the day before I wrestled.  It was a good showing for the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club and Cornell wrestlers.  This was a good tourney to win, but I definitely can’t relax and need to keep training hard until the U.S Open and World Team Trials.

      Great job yesterday Trav.
Coach Rob and I were at OIA Westerns all day, so we had to call various people to get up dates.

Travis, congratulations on your 'breakthrough' win yesterday! Even at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) Intermediate wrestling championships, held at your alma mater St. Louis School, updates were given over the loudslpeaker to the crowd.

What a difference two weeks can make, eh? What can you tell us about how this was so different from Russia?

Best wishes and train hard for your next tournaments! We're all pulling for you.

Awesome ... congratulations on your big win! Coach Los Banos had a lot to do with the announcements at the ILH Intermediate Wrestling Championships.

Even Coach Gonsalves was happy as hell after showing up with a sunburned head from going to the ProBowl. He's still bitter that he won the auction paying big bucks for the fake "Travis Lee" autographed Cornell singlet ... that apparrently you never ever wore. Of course Coach Gonsalves was bragging like hell that he had the authentic singlet you wore taking the National Championships. But then ... someone pointed out to him that the Cornell "Bear" was a different color from the picture of you winning. Then someone noted that it would be impossible for you to fit into a size large singlet. Coach Gonsalves ... cry was "please, please ... Travis tell me you wore this singlet at least once". Apparently, your answer was a big laugh and ... maybe ... I think I might have wore it!"

Coach Gonsalves claims that he got you to promise to send him something that you really wore in a match and said ... "that damn Travis ... he still hasn't paid up".

      Hi Travis,

Just a local update. St. Louis took first place in the ILH Dual Championships this past weekend by beating Iolani. Iolani upset Punahou and St. Louis beat Kamehameha to make it to the finals. Punahou did not have a full team and I think it affected their overall performance, they seemed out of step. Iolani wrestled really well as did St. Louis. It was the first time this whole season that St. Louis had 100% of our starters.

The overall standing going into the ILH Individual Championships this weekend has Punahou (#1), St. Louis (#2), KS (#3), and Iolani (#4). It will be a very competitive tournament. In many of the weight classes the matches have been won by 1 or 2 points. Keani Nishigaya 130 (SL), Arnold Toriumi 125 (Pun), and Daniel Chow 140(Pun) have been very dominating in their weight classes.

      Hi Travis,
At our Chinese New Year dinner last Sunday, your dad, my baby brother, shared the good news about your wrestling matches. We are so proud of you. Hope you continue to do well, I will be in California with cousin Ann and family in April but will return before your match in Las Vegas. Sure wish the Lee clan could go up and cheer for you. I know your mom and dad will be there. Take care and see you soon.
      Love and aloha,
      Aunty Rose

      Hi Travis,

This weekend was a disaster for St. Louis. Punahou took first place by storm at the ILH Championships with Kamehameha second, St. Louis third, and Iolani forth. Punahou has positioned themselves to be the favorites with overall strength going into the State Championship this weekend with 14 qualified wrestlers, KS has (13), SL has (10), and Iolani (10). But KS also let everyone know that they too are in contention with (5) ILH champs to Punahou’s (4), and (3) second place finishers to Punahou’s (2).

St. Louis had a major meltdown. We went from a projected 14 qualified wrestlers to 10 going into the States. The 4 wrestlers that we lost were all very good wrestlers capable of scoring and even placing in the States. Two of them were seniors and one was a State placer last year, the other one had only lost once or twice in the ILH and could have been seeded #1 but he got ejected for head butting when he was losing in his match. As bad as it may look with only two-thirds of our team going to States, we still got a legitimate shot, it’s just that everyone needs to show up and wrestle to their full potential and beyond. It’s really mind blowing from a coaching perspective because physically we are all right and technique we are all right, but mentally we are retarded. And we’ve worked so hard on the mental preparation.

My daughter Carla is going for her 4th title and for her the mental part is the hardest thing to overcome. This her senior year has the toughest competition she has ever faced in the States. The anxiety and the expectation of others put a lot of unnecessary stress on her. It doesn’t help that the newspaper is going to write an article about her leading up to the States. I think she even spoke to Brandon Low on how he dealt with the pressures and how he was able to maintain his optimal level of performance when it counts the most.

      Aloha,
      Dave

      Hi Trav,
It's so great to look back over the last couple years since we finished school and see the amazing things you have accomplished. You should be incredibly proud of yourself. I admire your dedication and work ethic. Hopefully we won't fall out of touch again! Everytime I see someone eating a Pop Tart I think of you in Riley-Robb. Miss you and take care!
