NYAC

The NYAC didn’t have quite the turn out I was hoping for, but I still got some good matches in.  I won 3 matches and lost in the finals 1-0, 1-0 to a guy from Japan.  In the quarterfinals I wrestled the Canadian that I faced in the finals of the Clansmen.  I gave up a take down late in the first period and lost 1-0.  I finally started getting going in the second period and got to a leg from the underhook position to score a takedown and win the second period 1-0.  I won the third period 6-0 with a take down, a gut and a crotch lift.  In the semifinals I beat Zach in a very close match.  I lost the first period 3-2 off a single leg attack.  I countered his single leg attack in the second period next to the edge to win 1-0 and countered the move again late in the third period to win as time ran out.  I didn’t wrestle very well in the finals at all.  I didn’t get off to a fast start and gave up two takedowns at the end of both periods.  Besides my finals match I think I wrestled pretty well, but definitely not up to my potential.  I have to start scoring points before I’m in danger of losing a period.  I think it was good for me to get back on the mat and stay injury free this weekend.  There are no tournaments coming up soon, so for now its back to training.

Hi Travis. Glad to see you had a good NYAC event overall and your disappointment at the loss in the final shows that you have the desire, as well as the skill, to always do better and win. The victory over Roberson was a fine result against a good competitor.
Who was the wrestler in the finals? Is he someone you have met before? Was his style different or was it just a matter as you say of not performing as well as you know you can. What is your training regime like between events as they are often far apart? How hard is it to keep up that peak level without the drive of competitions? Well done and hope you go on to more success!

I believe his name was Seshitu Shimizu and it was the first time I wrestled him.  His style wasn’t very different, but I did get caught coming out of my stance twice and gave up a point at the end of each period.  Training between competitions has been difficult, but when there’s a long break I try to travel to the OTC.  The OTC is a great place to sharpen technical skills and improve conditioning.

      Hi Travis.

Ran into your folks at a PAL tournament today. Your father told me to checkout our website. ILH started practice this week. Saint Louis Football is in the States so might be a few more weeks till the bulk of the varsity shows up for wrestling practice. Only 3 starters don't play football.

When you come back for Christmas, please drop in for some of our practices. You are always an inspiration to our boys. Isaac Rodrigues came out a few times to help coach. Hi said his brother Daniel will come out during the school break. Brandon Low should be back from UC Davis. My daughter (Carla) invited Brandon to her Winter Ball ... I think I'll borrow my brother's (Coach Craig's) shotgun! I'd imagine Ben Wilmore will come home for the break as well. Maybe you can scrounge up a lineup of workout partners.

You know ... you can always pick a fight with Coach Los Banos!!! I could tell that he loved the beating you gave him last time.

In fact, I think this time he will be a little more prepared. He came out to wrestling practice this past Wednesday ... all pumped up!!! Said ... he got to get back into shape! It was great to see him on the mat again.

        Dave-

I believe Ben and Brandon will be home during the Christmas break.  I also think Grant Nakamura may come to
Oahu train, but I'm not sure when yet.  I'll definitely stop by the SL practice when I'm home.  Anyway, it’s good to hear Los Banos is on the mat again, it was just a matter of time.  How does the team look so far?
